If the thought of a dental appointment makes your palms sweat, you’re far from alone. Dental anxiety affects a large number of people. Some put off check-ups for years, which can turn small problems into bigger ones.
The good news is that dentistry has changed. Today, there are gentle, effective ways to help you stay calm. One of the most popular is nitrous oxide sedation, often known as “laughing gas.” This guide explains how it works and whether it might be right for you.
Why Do So Many People Feel Anxious at the Dentist?
Dental fear has many sources. You may recognize one of these:
- A bad experience in the past, often in childhood
- Fear of pain or needles
- Fear of the unknown and not knowing what’s happening
- Feeling a loss of control while lying back in the chair
- Sensitivity to sounds and smells of the dental environment
- Embarrassment about the condition of your teeth
- A strong gag reflex
Whatever the cause, your feelings are valid. A good dental team doesn’t judge. We listen and find ways to make you comfortable.
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a colourless gas mixed with oxygen and breathed in through a small mask that fits over your nose. It’s one of the oldest and most widely used forms of dental sedation.
It doesn’t put you to sleep. You stay awake, can respond to questions, and can follow instructions. What it does is produce a feeling of calm and relaxation, which helps ease nervousness.
What Does It Feel Like?
Experiences vary, but patients commonly describe:
- A warm, light, or tingling sensation
- A feeling of deep relaxation
- A floaty or “heavy” feeling in the arms and legs
- Reduced awareness of time, so the visit seems to pass quickly
- Less concern about what’s happening around them
Some people feel a little giggly, which is where the nickname comes from. Not everyone does.
Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation
It works quickly. You’ll typically feel the effects within minutes of breathing it in.
You stay in control. The level can be adjusted during your visit, so you feel comfortable throughout.
It wears off fast. When the gas is switched off and you breathe oxygen, the effects clear quickly. In many cases patients can return to their normal activities afterward, though we’ll confirm this for your situation.
It’s non-invasive. There are no needles needed for the sedation itself.
It suits many types of treatment. It can make fillings, extractions, root canals, and other procedures more comfortable.
It can help children too, when appropriate, making visits less scary.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Nitrous oxide is often a good choice for people who:
- Feel mild to moderate dental anxiety
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Find it hard to sit still for long appointments
- Have had a difficult dental experience before
- Need a procedure that might otherwise feel stressful
It may not be suitable for everyone. Certain respiratory conditions, pregnancy, or particular medical situations can affect whether it’s recommended. Always tell us about your health history and any medications before treatment so we can decide what’s safest for you.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Before: We’ll discuss your medical history, answer questions, and explain what will happen. Let us know about your worries so we can tailor your visit.
During: A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. Within a few minutes, you’ll start to feel relaxed. We’ll still use local anesthetic where needed to numb the area being treated, so the sedation and numbing work together.
After: The mask is removed and you’ll breathe pure oxygen for a short time. Most people feel normal quickly. We’ll give you any aftercare instructions for your treatment.
Other Ways We Help You Relax
Sedation is only one part of a comfortable experience. At Central Oakville Dental Care, we’ve designed our clinic around your comfort:
- Ceiling-mounted TVs so you can watch Netflix during treatment
- Comfortable chairs
- A “feel like family” approach. We talk through procedures, answer questions, and never rush
- No-pressure consultations. Dental care discussion is as important as the treatment itself
You can also try some simple techniques yourself: deep, slow breathing, listening to music, bringing a trusted friend, and booking appointments at quieter times of day. Telling us a hand signal, like raising your hand, lets you pause the visit at any moment.
Don’t Let Fear Delay Your Care
Avoiding the dentist can feel like a relief in the short term, but it often leads to bigger problems and more complicated treatment. Small cavities become painful infections. Gum problems progress quietly. A calm, supportive visit now can prevent a stressful emergency later.
Care for the Whole Family
We welcome new patients, children, adults, and seniors, and we offer emergency dental care if you’re in pain. We accept many insurance providers and the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). If you don’t see your insurer listed, contact us and we’ll check your coverage.
