What is bruxism?
Bruxism is a common condition, and it is the term used to describe the habitual grinding of teeth. Many people who suffer from bruxism grind their teeth at night while they are sleeping (sleep bruxism) although some also grind throughout the day (day-time bruxism). Teeth grinding can be a very difficult habit to break because it is often done subconsciously.
People with bruxism can develop several painful side effects including:
Jaw pain
Worn tooth enamel can result in cracked and broken teeth.
Headaches
Earaches
Facial pain
Fatigue from poor sleep quality.

Although there seem to be a number of factors that can increase the risk of bruxism (genetic, smoking, certain medications, and certain sleep disorders), stress seems to be the main cause of the condition. The good news is that night guards provide both a simple and non-invasive solution for most bruxers.
Types of mouthguards
Although it may be tempting to reach for the cheapest option, not all mouthguards are made bruxers. The various types of mouthguards available :
Stock mouthguards – these one-size-fits-all over-the-counter guards are usually the cheapest but they also offer the least protection and are uncomfortable to wear – especially while you are sleeping. Since they are not very durable, bruxers may even be able to chew right through them very quickly. They are also not balanced and may put high pressure on certain teeth, which can cause tooth damage or drift.
Custom dental night guards – these are the mouthguards we make at Central Oakville Dental Care. They are made specifically for you from an accurate dental impression and made by an expert Dental Technician using professional materials and processes to give you the best possible protection from teeth grinding. These are balanced to spread the bite load more evenly and they reduce the risk of tooth movement. These are the most expensive option, however, they last the longest and dental insurance usually covers a significant portion of the cost.
How do I get a custom dental night guard?
Getting a custom night guard involves a trip to the dentist to have accurate impressions taken of your teeth. The impressions are then sent to a dental laboratory to make your mouthguard.
When your mouthguard is ready (usually after one week), you will come back to your dentist’s office to ensure a proper fit and the bite is checked and balanced.
